Sherry Lee Watson

Congratulations on winning PEDESTRIAN TELEVISION’s Screen Star Of The Year award!! That’s huge!
Thank you!
What does the win mean to you?
It’s a bit of a surprise, to be honest! It means the world to know people have enjoyed watching my work this year and I’m very humbled to be receiving this award.
Omg to me it makes so much sense! This year Heartbreak High S2 came out, and you were such a standout with your performance as Missy. It’s perfect that you’re getting your flowers for the role!
Thank you! I’m so grateful to see the reaction people have had to Missy. It’s been truly such an honour to bring her to life and a testament to the work of the writers on Heartbreak High, as well as the rest of the creative team.
Absolutely!

When you first got the script for Season Two and had a look at your character arc, we’re you stoked?
Yes haha! I was equally stoked and nervous for this season — particularly around a scene which involves Missy ahh… lettn’ one loose 😭😂

It’s so fun to be able to explore these character’s vulnerabilities and bring lighthearted moments to a show which explores the highs and lows of teenage life in Australia.
Hahaha omg that scene will go down as one of the most terrifyingly relatable moments in Australian TV history.

Another amazing thing about Missy is that she’s become a bit of a Gen Z bi icon. How does that make you feel?
LOVE this! She knows who she is through and through.

That’s what I’ve always loved about Missy, she’s relentlessly unapologetic about being herself.

I did not have the same confidence in my sexuality at her age!

Honestly, stepping into Missy’s staunchness around her identity has healed a little bit of my younger self.
I love that so much!

I was such a late bloomer coming out as bi and I wonder if I would’ve been if I had characters like missy around, TBH.
Same! It’s such an honour to be able to BE the representation I didn’t get to see growing up. 💜
Bless !

Also, according to your IMDb page, Heartbreak High was your first acting gig. Is this actually true?
Yes! So I’m a theatre kid 🤓 I trained in Music Theatre at VCA right after high school. 💃

I’d always planned to be on stage HOWEVER I booked a screen gig (HBH) eight after graduating and ended up falling in love with film/TV!

I have another project coming out later this year which I’m very excited for people to see as part of it was actually shot in my hometown of Alice Springs. 🥹😍

In saying that — I still have SO much love for the stage and am hungry to go back to theatre.
We love a theatre kid!!!!

I saw the announcement for your upcoming project Thou Shalt Not Steal and I can’t wait to find out some more juicy details about it. 👀

But first, what has it been like for you going from relative obscurity to experiencing fame in just a couple of years?

It’s been a whirlwind! Especially after season two, I’m still not quite used to being stopped in public.

It’s made for a few embarrassing encounters where I’m being asked for a photo while still in my PJ’s at my local milkbar 💀

BUT it’s always so rewarding to hear how much people appreciate your work as an actor, it’s very humbling.
Oooo lord I can only imagine ⚰️

Does being recognised happen a lot for you these days? Or is it like only the worst moments when it happens to you?
Honestly it depends if I’m with other people from the Heartbreak High cast! Or if I'm in an area where there are a lot of high school students around.

A lot of people don’t realise how short I am 😆 I’m 5’1’ so when I’m by myself I can easily fly under the radar — which is a big relief for my social anxiety tbh 😅

And I definitely get a lot of people taking not-so-sneaky pics at cafes etc. (Girl, nobody holds their phone like that 😂)
CALL EM OUT hahahahah

But also that is one of the brilliant benefits of being 5’1’. Hopefully, it makes up for not being able to see shit at live gigs.
HAHAHA I get it though, as a socially anxious girly, I’d do the same.
My last Heartbreak High related question for you — and this is a safe, safe space — do you ever watch thirsty fan edits of yourself on TikTok?
HAHAHA I’m only human 😅 However, it can get a bit overwhelming sometimes so I’m no stranger to deleting TikTok ever once in a while (then re-downloading it the next day 🫠)
I feel that on a molecular level.

Okay, let’s talk about your exciting new project!!! What can you tell me about Thou Shalt Not Steal?so, according to your IMDb page, Heartbreak High was your first acting gig. Is this actually true?
Absolutely!

So, without spoiling too much 🤫😉 It’s a new Stan Original Series which follows my character Robyn — a young delinquent who embarks on a perilous journey across the outback in search of a long lost family secret.
OOoOoOOOO Colour me INTRIGUED

You have some incredible co-stars too! I saw a comment on IG where someone was like, “CASHY BOY AND MISSY MOO” so obviously having your Heartbreak High co-star Will Mcdonald in the mix is exciting to the HBH fans!
Yes I was OVER THE MOON when I heard Will got the part of Gidge!!!

The show follows the both of us as we embark on this adventure starting in the central desert. 🥹

He’s such a good mate of mine and it’s SOOOO SPECIAL to be able to show him some of Arrernte Country, and introduce him to my family who have been big fans of his since his days on Home And Away.
Omg that is so special, I love this for you two!

What has it been like shooting in Alice Springs so far?
It was such a full-circle moment. I left Alice to pursue my education in the arts so to be able to come back and work here as the lead of a series was very surreal.
That feels like some major universe, meant-to-be stuff, tbh.

And finally, Sherry-Lee, where can fans follow you to keep up with Thou Shalt Not Steal and the other incredible projects you inevitably have in the pipeline?
I’m most active on Instagram! I’ll be posting lots of content in the coming months to promote TSNS as well as some other upcoming projects!

I also frequently keep people up to date with my cat!
Oooo hell yeah, cat content is an absolute treat on top of it all!!
